Originally released on Dot Records, this transport-themed concept album transforms the machines that defined modern travel into a series of colourful musical portraits, capturing the fascination with speed, technology and progress that characterised the late 1950s and early 1960s.

A talented composer, arranger and orchestra leader, Thompson developed a distinctive sound built around polished orchestration, lively rhythms and a keen sense of musical theatre. His work sits comfortably alongside the sophisticated lounge and Space Age Pop recordings associated with artists such as Esquivel, sharing their fascination with inventive arrangements, vivid sonic imagery and the possibilities of the modern recording studio.

Across twelve compositions, The Sound Of Speed journeys through an extraordinary variety of transport, from diesel locomotives and ocean liners to motor scooters, racing cars, missiles and helicopters. Each track takes its inspiration from a different vehicle, giving the album a strong conceptual identity while allowing Thompson to explore contrasting moods, rhythms and orchestral colours. The result is an imaginative blend of jazz, orchestral pop and exotica-adjacent lounge music, with a distinctly period-specific sense of optimism and adventure.

Highlights include the urban energy of “Sub-Manhattan Blues”, the continental flavour of “La Vespa”, the racing-inspired “Le Mans” and the more whimsical “Three-Wheeler Waltz”. Elsewhere, “Midnight Sailing” evokes the romance of ocean travel, while “Star Fire” and “Count Down” look towards the futuristic excitement of aviation and space-age technology. The sequence moves between speed, elegance and humour, making the album as much a musical travelogue as a showcase for Thompson’s arranging skills.

For collectors of vintage lounge, easy listening, exotica, Space Age Pop and orchestral jazz, The Sound Of Speed offers a fascinating glimpse into an era when popular music embraced modernity with style and imagination. It also appeals to fans of library music and cinematic instrumental arrangements, with its sharply defined themes and evocative musical storytelling. An unusual and characterful release from Bob Thompson, this is a record that celebrates the sound, spectacle and romance of getting from one place to another.

Tracklist

Side A
A1.
