(Volume 2), a superb 25-track collection assembled by one of the UK’s most passionate champions of soul music. Released on Kent in 1999, this follow-up to the celebrated first volume digs deeper into the vaults for performances full of heartbreak, longing, gospel-inflected intensity and unforgettable vocal expression.

The collection opens with Doris Duke’s beautifully expressive “How Was I To Know You Cared,” followed by Eddie Holman’s “I'm Not Gonna Give Up” and the stirring two-part performance “The Sweeter He Is” by The Soul Children. From there, a wealth of distinctive voices and overlooked recordings unfolds, including Tony Owens’ “I Don't Want Nobody But My Baby,” Bobby Moore & The Formosts’ “It Was A Lie” and the tender “A Love That Never Grows Old” by Jimmy & Louise Tig And Company.

There are familiar names here, too, but heard in performances that reward attentive listening. Ben E. King’s “It's All Over,” Arthur Conley’s “Let Nothing Separate Us,” Irma Thomas’ “These Four Walls” and Otis Redding’s “Just One More Day” sit naturally alongside rarer treasures from Nat Phillips, Wendy René, Johnny Adams, Ruby Johnson and Doris Allen. Each track reveals a different shade of soul, from restrained vulnerability to impassioned, full-throated delivery.

One of the collection’s highlights is Bessie Banks’ moving rendition of “Go Now,” the original version of the song later made famous in the UK by The Moody Blues. George Perkins & The Silver Stars bring a different kind of intensity to “Cryin' In The Streets (Part 1),” while Toussaint McCall’s enduring “Nothing Takes The Place Of You” and Eddie & Ernie’s “Hiding In Shadows” deepen the album’s rich emotional atmosphere.

Compiled with Dave Godin’s characteristic appreciation for the feeling behind a performance, this is far more than a collection of obscure tracks. It is a celebration of deep soul in all its forms, bringing together remarkable singers, evocative songs and recordings that deserve to be heard. An excellent addition to any soul collection, particularly for listeners who value rare discoveries and emotionally uncompromising performances.

Tracklist

Doris Duke – How Was I To Know You Cared (2:38)

Eddie Holman – I'm Not Gonna Give Up (2:54)

The Soul Children – The Sweeter He Is (Parts 1 & 2) (6:17)

Tony Owens – I Don't Want Nobody But My Baby (3:45)

Bobby Moore & The Formosts – It Was A Lie (2:23)

Jimmy & Louise Tig And Company – A Love That Never Grows Old (2:56)

Ben E King – It's All Over (3:12)

Nat Phillips – I'm Sorry I Hurt You (2:50)

Wendy René – What Will Tomorrow Bring ?
