Bringing together 12 tracks recorded across 1984 and 1985, this compilation showcases Masekela's distinctive blend of African musical traditions, jazz, funk, pop and contemporary rhythmic production. It captures an artist continually exploring new sounds while maintaining a strong connection to his South African roots.

A celebrated trumpeter, composer and bandleader, Masekela built an international career through music that combined melodic sophistication with infectious grooves and a deep sense of cultural identity. His work frequently drew on South African musical traditions, incorporating them into jazz arrangements that could be equally at home on the dancefloor or in a live performance setting. His recordings also reflected his experiences in exile and his long-standing connection to the cultural and political life of his homeland.

The material on African Breeze reflects the adventurous sound of Masekela's mid-1980s output. Tracks such as "Don't Go Lose It Baby" and the title track "African Breeze" reveal a more contemporary, groove-driven approach, while "The Rainmaker (Motla Le Pula)" and "It's Raining (Pula Ea Na)" bring African themes and rhythmic character to the foreground. The result is a varied collection that moves between jazz, funk, dance-oriented arrangements and African musical influences without losing the warmth and melodic clarity that distinguish Masekela's work.

The compilation also revisits familiar musical territory. "Grazing In The Grass" recalls one of Masekela's best-known compositions, while "Wimoweh" connects the collection to a song with deep roots in Southern African musical history and a long international recording legacy. Elsewhere, "Lady", "Politician" and "The Joke Of Life (Brinca De Vivre)" demonstrate the breadth of his 1980s repertoire, balancing accessible songwriting with an unmistakable rhythmic sensibility. "Ritual Dancer" and "Zulu Wedding" further underline the importance of African cultural references within his musical world.

Rather than representing a single studio session or one original album, African Breeze draws together recordings from several releases, including Techno-Bush, Jewel of the Nile and Waiting for the Rain, alongside the separately issued recording of "Wimoweh".
