Recorded during a period when Jones was exploring contemporary material alongside the classic standards that had established his reputation, the album offers a varied Christmas programme that combines familiar festive favourites, religious songs and gospel-influenced selections.

Jones rose to prominence in the early 1960s and became known for his refined vocal delivery, impeccable control and ability to bring warmth and elegance to popular song. His musical style sits comfortably between traditional pop, vocal jazz and easy listening, with carefully arranged accompaniment allowing his voice to remain at the centre of the performance.

The album opens with “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”, a timeless seasonal standard that suits Jones’s relaxed, expressive delivery. “Some Children See Him” brings a more thoughtful perspective to the Christmas repertoire, while “Little Altar Boy” explores the devotional side of the season. “O Little Town Of Bethlehem” continues the traditional religious theme before “Christmas Is ...” introduces a more contemporary song into the collection.

The second side broadens the album’s musical character. “Christmas Day”, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, brings a distinctive late-1960s pop sensibility to the programme, while “Oh Happy Day” draws on the gospel song that became an international hit through the Edwin Hawkins Singers. These selections give the album a more contemporary flavour than a collection built exclusively around traditional carols. “Silver Bells” and “Jingle Bells” provide familiar seasonal favourites, before “Oh Holy Night” brings the programme to a reflective close.

Produced by Jack Pleis, the 1969 recording reflects the polished studio craftsmanship of the period while allowing Jones to move between intimate seasonal ballads, religious material and brighter popular arrangements. The combination of traditional Christmas songs and contemporary late-sixties selections makes the album an interesting snapshot of how established vocalists approached festive music during this era.

For fans of classic crooners, traditional pop, vocal jazz and vintage Christmas albums, A Jack Jones Christmas offers an alternative to more familiar seasonal recordings. It is equally suited to a collection of mid-century vocal music or a festive vinyl selection that favours elegant singing, carefully arranged accompaniment and a blend of spiritual reflection and popular entertainment.

Tracklist

Side A

A1 – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
A2 – Some Children See Him
A3 – Little Altar Boy
A4 – O Little Town Of Bethlehem
A5 – Christmas Is ...

Side B

B1 – Christmas Day
B2 – Oh Happy Day
B3 – Silver Bells
B4 – Jingle Bells
B5 – Oh Holy Night
