Spanning his classic Motown recordings, sophisticated 1970s soul and later R&B successes, this collection provides an excellent overview of an artist whose music helped define several generations of popular music.

Born in Washington, D.C., Marvin Gaye rose to prominence after joining Motown Records in the early 1960s. Initially recognised for his smooth vocal style and polished soul recordings, he gradually established himself as a pioneering songwriter, producer and recording artist, pushing beyond the conventions of commercial Motown pop to explore more personal, socially conscious and musically ambitious territory. His expressive voice, remarkable vocal range and distinctive multi-layered harmonies became central to his enduring appeal.

The collection opens with 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine', one of Motown's most iconic recordings, featuring its unmistakable bassline, dramatic arrangement and emotionally charged vocal performance. Other essential early hits include the irresistible 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)' and 'Too Busy Thinking About My Baby', showcasing the infectious songwriting and rhythmic sophistication that made the Motown sound internationally famous.

Gaye's extraordinary ability to deliver romantic soul is represented by the timeless 'Let's Get It On', with its sensual groove and intimate vocal performance, and 'Got To Give It Up (Part 1)', an infectious disco-influenced funk recording that became a major dancefloor favourite. The inclusion of 'Sexual Healing' brings the collection into his later career, highlighting the electronic production and contemporary R&B influences that helped make his 1982 comeback such a success.

The album also celebrates some of Gaye's finest collaborative recordings. His unforgettable partnership with Tammi Terrell is represented by 'You're All I Need To Get By' and 'The Onion Song', both featuring the beautiful vocal interplay that made their recordings so special. Elsewhere, 'It Takes Two' showcases his celebrated collaboration with Kim Weston, while 'You Are Everything' and 'Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)' highlight his work with Diana Ross.

Perhaps the most significant recording here is 'What's Going On', the title track of his groundbreaking 1971 album. Combining sophisticated soul arrangements with a deeply thoughtful message about social division, conflict and the human condition, it remains one of the most important and influential songs in popular music history. 'Abraham, Martin And John' adds another reflective moment to the collection, while 'Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)' demonstrates Gaye's remarkable ability to transform a song into a deeply personal vocal performance.

Originally issued in the UK in 1983 on Telstar Records, this 16-track compilation offers an enjoyable journey through Marvin Gaye's extraordinary musical legacy. Bringing together classic Motown hits, romantic duets, funk, disco and sophisticated soul, it is a varied collection that demonstrates the depth and versatility of one of music's greatest performers.

An excellent collection for fans of classic Motown, soul, funk and R&B, and a great introduction to the timeless recordings of Marvin Gaye.

Tracklist

Side A

I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Let's Get It On

Too Busy Thinking About My Baby

How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)

You're All I Need To Get By

Got To Give It Up (Part 1)

You Are Everything

Midnight Lady

Side B

Sexual Healing

What's Going On

Abraham, Martin And John

It Takes Two

Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)

My Love Is Waiting

The Onion Song

Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)
