Released through Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records, the album followed Diamonds and Pearls and further developed the musical partnership between Prince and The New Power Generation, whose tight rhythms, punchy horn arrangements and energetic vocal contributions give the record much of its distinctive character.

Often referred to as the Love Symbol Album or Symbol Album, the record takes its name from Prince’s now-iconic, unpronounceable emblem, foreshadowing the artistic identity shift that would become central to his career in the following years. Across its eighteen tracks, Prince moves effortlessly between swaggering funk workouts, sensual R&B, melodic ballads, guitar-driven drama and experimental interludes, creating an album that feels expansive, theatrical and constantly in motion.

The opening track, “My Name Is Prince,” is a confident declaration of identity, driven by insistent rhythms and rap-led exchanges, while “Sexy M.F.” delivers one of the album’s most memorable bursts of horn-powered funk. Both tracks showcase the close relationship between Prince’s musicianship and The New Power Generation’s rhythmic force, combining live-band energy with the sharp, contemporary production of early-1990s R&B.

Elsewhere, “The Morning Papers” offers a more reflective, melodic side of Prince’s songwriting, while “Blue Light” brings a relaxed reggae-influenced groove. “7” stands out for its distinctive vocal layering, atmospheric arrangement and spiritual undertones, becoming one of the album’s defining songs. The closing stretch moves into more theatrical territory, culminating in “The Sacrifice of Victor,” an ambitious finale featuring gospel vocals that underline the record’s dramatic scope.

The album’s appeal lies in its refusal to settle into a single genre. Funk basslines, expressive guitar work, programmed rhythms, brass arrangements, sensual vocals and gospel harmonies coexist within a carefully constructed sequence that reflects Prince’s restless creativity. The New Power Generation are integral to this sound, bringing a fuller ensemble feel to music that remains unmistakably Prince’s own.

For fans of Prince, Minneapolis funk, sophisticated R&B and adventurous 1990s pop, Love Symbol is an essential chapter in his catalogue. It captures an artist pushing beyond conventional pop structures while retaining the hooks, grooves and musical personality that made his work so enduring. A compelling addition to any Prince collection, it also rewards listeners interested in the meeting point between funk, soul, rock and the evolving sound of early-1990s popular music.

Tracklist

My Name Is Prince

Sexy M.F.

Love 2 the 9's

The Morning Papers

The Max

Segue

Blue Light

I Wanna Melt with U

Sweet Baby

The Continental

Damn U

Arrogance

The Flow

7

And God Created Woman

3 Chains o' Gold

Segue

The Sacrifice of Victor
