Known for his adventurous approach to pop, rock and recording technology, Rundgren uses the album to explore the relationship between musical influence, interpretation and originality.

The first half of Faithful features Rundgren recreating six classic recordings from the 1960s, aiming to reproduce the original arrangements and sounds with remarkable attention to detail. The selections span British psychedelia, American pop and experimental rock, reflecting the musical landscape that helped shape his own artistic development. Among them are the Yardbirds’ “Happenings Ten Years Time Ago”, the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations”, the Beatles’ “Rain” and “Strawberry Fields Forever”, Bob Dylan’s “Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine”, and Jimi Hendrix’s “If Six Was Nine”.

These recordings make Faithful especially compelling for listeners interested in studio craftsmanship and the evolution of psychedelic pop and rock. Rather than simply presenting the songs as straightforward covers, Rundgren approaches them as an intricate technical and musical challenge, recreating the sonic character of recordings that had pushed the boundaries of popular music during the previous decade.

The album’s second half turns to original material, revealing a different side of Rundgren’s musical personality. “Black And White” and “Love Of The Common Man” combine melodic songwriting with his characteristic studio polish, while “When I Pray” introduces a more reflective mood. “Cliche” and “The Verb "To Love"” demonstrate his willingness to explore unconventional structures and extended musical ideas, before “Boogies (Hamburger Hell)” closes the album on a more playful, groove-oriented note.

The contrast between faithful recreation and original composition gives the record its central appeal. It is both a tribute to the records that shaped a generation of musicians and an illustration of Rundgren’s own creative independence. His meticulous production, eclectic musical interests and fascination with recording techniques place the album firmly within the adventurous spirit of 1970s studio-based rock.

For fans of Todd Rundgren, psychedelic pop, progressive-leaning rock, classic Beatles and Beach Boys recordings, and the art of the recording studio, Faithful offers a rewarding listen with an unusual concept at its heart.
