Live in Tokyo by Brad Mehldau

Live in Tokyo captures Brad Mehldau at his most exploratory and expressive, presenting a solo piano performance that moves fluidly between jazz standards, contemporary reinterpretations, and deeply personal improvisation. Recorded live, the album highlights Mehldau’s ability to transform familiar material into expansive, evolving narratives.

The set opens with Nick Drake’s “Things Behind the Sun”, a long-time touchstone in Mehldau’s repertoire, immediately establishing his approach: patient development, harmonic sophistication, and an emphasis on emotional resonance over virtuosity for its own sake. Throughout the performance, Mehldau alternates between lyrical introspection and rhythmic complexity, often stretching time and harmony in ways that feel organic rather than imposed.

Standards such as “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “How Long Has This Been Going On” (by the Gershwin brothers) are reimagined with subtle reharmonisation and shifting rhythmic phrasing, while Cole Porter’s “From This Moment On” and Thelonious Monk’s “Monk’s Dream” show Mehldau engaging directly with the jazz tradition from both inside and outside its boundaries.

One of the album’s defining moments is the extended interpretation of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android”, which becomes a multi-sectioned suite in its own right. Mehldau expands the harmonic world of the song while preserving its emotional intensity, demonstrating his unique ability to bridge contemporary rock songwriting with jazz improvisational language.

The inclusion of another Nick Drake piece, “River Man”, reinforces the reflective tone that runs through the performance. Across the set, silence and space are used as actively as notes, allowing ideas to breathe and evolve naturally.

Live in Tokyo ultimately stands as a masterclass in solo piano improvisation - intimate yet expansive, rooted in tradition yet constantly reaching outward.
