Nirvana – Sliver is an essential snapshot of the band during the period when their raw punk-influenced grunge sound was beginning to reach a wider audience. Originally released in 1990, the single captures Nirvana's ability to combine abrasive guitars, infectious melodies and Kurt Cobain's unmistakable songwriting into short, explosive tracks.

The A-side, "Sliver," is one of Nirvana's most recognisable early songs. Built around a simple, instantly memorable guitar riff and an increasingly frantic vocal performance from Cobain, the track balances dark humour and childhood imagery with the band's trademark noisy intensity.

The B-side opens with "Dive," a heavier and more aggressive track driven by thick guitar distortion and a powerful rhythm section. It provides a perfect counterpoint to the concise, hook-heavy nature of "Sliver."

Completing the release is a live version of "About A Girl," originally from Nirvana's debut album Bleach. The performance highlights the melodic side of Cobain's songwriting and provides an interesting contrast with the heavier material surrounding it.

Released during Nirvana's crucial early period, Sliver sits between the underground Seattle grunge scene and the alternative-rock explosion that would soon follow. It also captures the band with Chad Channing on drums, shortly before their classic lineup with Dave Grohl took shape.
