Rather than relying on conventional swing structures, Space unfolds like a suite of musical scenes, each built around atmosphere and tonal storytelling. The “Visitor From Venus” and “Visitor From Mars” pieces, both composed by John Lewis, reflect his long-standing fascination with classical composition techniques and thematic development, while still retaining the group’s understated swing pulse and blues sensitivity.

The album also includes a reflective reading of “Here’s That Rainy Day”, where restraint and harmonic subtlety take precedence, and Miljenko Prohaska’s “Dilemma”, which adds a slightly more modern, European-leaning compositional voice to the set. The closing interpretation of Rodrigo’s “Adagio From Concierto De Aranjuez” is a standout, extending the quartet’s connection to classical repertoire and showcasing their ability to translate orchestral material into intimate jazz expression.
