James Gang – Bang
James Gang – Bang
Released in 1973, Bang is the eighth studio album by American rock pioneers James Gang. Recorded during a period of transition following the departure of guitar legend Joe Walsh, the album features guitarist Tommy Bolin, whose dynamic playing brought fresh energy and a harder-edged sound to the band. Blending classic rock, blues, funk, and melodic songwriting, Bang stands as one of the strongest albums from the Bolin era.
Known for their powerful musicianship and memorable riffs, James Gang had already established themselves as one of America's leading rock bands. With Bolin's fluid guitar work complementing the rhythm section of Dale Peters and Jim Fox, Bang combines driving rock anthems with thoughtful ballads and progressive touches, highlighting the band's continued evolution.
The album opens with the atmospheric Standing In The Rain, setting the tone with soaring guitar work and expressive vocals. The Devil Is Singing Our Song follows with its bluesy swagger, while Must Be Love delivers a melodic change of pace. The reflective Alexis closes Side A with rich arrangements and one of the album's most memorable performances.
Side B begins with the energetic Ride The Wind, before Got No Time For Trouble adds a dose of blues-infused rock. The heartfelt Rather Be Alone With You (A.K.A. Song For Dale) provides a quieter moment, leading into the melodic From Another Time. The album concludes with the epic Mystery, an expansive finale that showcases Tommy Bolin's exceptional guitar playing and the band's adventurous musical approach.
Although often overlooked in comparison with the band's earlier releases, Bang has become a favourite among classic rock collectors and Tommy Bolin fans alike. Combining outstanding musicianship with strong songwriting and memorable performances, it remains an excellent addition to any collection of 1970s American rock.
