Allan Holdsworth – Sand

Allan Holdsworth – Sand is a remarkable showcase for the pioneering guitarist's highly individual approach to jazz fusion, progressive rock and experimental instrumental music. Originally released in 1987, the album combines Holdsworth's extraordinary legato guitar technique with synthesised guitar textures, complex rhythms and atmospheric compositions.

The title track "Sand" immediately establishes the album's distinctive sound, with Holdsworth creating fluid, almost vocal-like melodies that blur the boundaries between guitar and synthesizer. "Distance Vs. Desire" and "Pud Wud" continue the record's intricate blend of jazz harmony, rapid-fire guitar passages and sophisticated rhythmic arrangements.

Side two opens with "Clown", followed by the more experimental "The 4.15 Bradford Executive" and "Mac Man". Throughout the album, Holdsworth's playing is remarkably fluid and expressive, favouring long, seamless lines and unconventional harmonic ideas over traditional blues-rock guitar phrasing.

A key figure in the development of jazz-rock and progressive fusion, Holdsworth had already built an impressive résumé through his work with Soft Machine, The New Tony Williams Lifetime, Gong, Bruford and UK before establishing himself as a solo artist. His approach to the guitar was hugely influential on generations of technically ambitious musicians, particularly in the worlds of fusion and progressive metal.

Sand is especially notable for its use of Holdsworth's SynthAxe, an electronic instrument that allowed him to trigger synthesised sounds directly from the guitar. This helped him create a uniquely futuristic sonic palette that remains instantly recognisable.

For collectors and fans of Allan Holdsworth, jazz fusion, progressive rock, instrumental guitar, SynthAxe and 1980s jazz, Sand is an essential and highly distinctive release from one of the most innovative guitarists of all time.
