Created by Richard O'Brien, The Rocky Horror Show originally premiered in London in 1973 before becoming an international stage success and subsequently being adapted for film. The movie was produced by Lou Adler and Michael White, with Jim Sharman directing and O'Brien writing the screenplay alongside him. The film's deliberate mixture of science-fiction, horror-film imagery, rock 'n' roll and sexual subversion helped establish its unique identity.

The soundtrack itself was produced by Richard Hartley, with the music arranged and directed for the film recording. Sessions were recorded at Olympic Studios in London, bringing together the original film cast with a studio band including musicians such as John "Rabbit" Bundrick and Dave Wintour.
