Andy Gibb – Shadow Dancing

A defining album of the late-1970s disco era, Shadow Dancing sees Andy Gibb at the height of his commercial success, blending polished pop, soulful vocals, disco rhythms, and the unmistakable songwriting influence of his brothers, the Bee Gees. Released in 1978 on RSO Records, it was Gibb's second studio album and his highest-charting album in the US, while reaching No. 15 on the UK Albums Chart.

The album is built around the enormous success of Shadow Dancing, written by Andy Gibb alongside Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. The title track became a seven-week No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was one of the defining pop and disco singles of 1978. Remarkably, it gave Andy Gibb three consecutive US No. 1 singles at the beginning of his solo career — a record-breaking achievement for a solo artist at the time.

While the Bee Gees' influence is clear throughout the record, Shadow Dancing also demonstrates Andy Gibb's own abilities as a songwriter and vocalist. He wrote six of the album's ten tracks, including Fool For A Night, One More Look At The Night, Melody, I Go For You, Good Feeling, and Waiting For You. His distinctive, husky vocal style gives the album a more intimate character than the high-falsetto sound associated with many of the Bee Gees' biggest disco recordings.

The album also produced two further major hits: the romantic An Everlasting Love, written by Barry Gibb and reaching No. 5 in the US, and (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away, another Top 10 hit. Together with the title track, these songs helped Shadow Dancing achieve platinum status and cemented Andy Gibb as one of the major pop stars of the disco era.

With its combination of 1970s disco, pop, soul, soft rock and Bee Gees-style songwriting, Shadow Dancing is an essential addition to any Andy Gibb or late-'70s vinyl collection. A particularly strong choice for fans of the Bee Gees, Saturday Night Fever, disco classics, vintage pop and the golden era of RSO Records.
