Atomic Rooster – Made In England

Originally released in 1972, Made In England is the fourth studio album by British rock band Atomic Rooster and one of the most distinctive chapters in the group's evolving history. Led by founding member and keyboardist Vincent Crane, the album finds the band exploring a more soulful, funk-inflected direction, bringing together progressive rock foundations, bluesy guitar work, Hammond organ and powerful lead vocals.

The arrival of vocalist Chris Farlowe brought a striking new character to Atomic Rooster's music. Known for his commanding, blues-influenced voice, Farlowe gives the material a tougher, more soulful edge, complementing Crane's expressive keyboards and Steve Bolton's guitar work. Drummer Ric Parnell adds a dynamic rhythmic foundation, helping the band move between heavy rock passages, relaxed grooves and more intricate progressive arrangements.

The opening track, "Time Take My Life", establishes the album's blend of muscular rock instrumentation and Crane's unmistakable keyboard sound. "Stand By Me", released as a single, showcases the band's more accessible, soul-tinged approach, while "Little Bit Of Inner Air" offers a contrasting moment within the record's varied musical palette. "Don't Know What Went Wrong" and "Never To Lose" continue the album's mixture of hard-rock energy and groove-led songwriting.

The second side develops the record's distinctive character further. "Breathless" features prominent keyboard work, while "Space Cowboy" brings a looser, funk-oriented feel to the programme. "People You Can't Trust" returns to a heavier sound, and "All In Satan's Name" reflects the darker atmosphere associated with Atomic Rooster's early progressive-rock identity. The album closes with "Close Your Eyes", rounding out a collection that balances the band's established intensity with a broader musical vocabulary.

Produced by Vincent Crane and recorded at Trident Studios in London, Made In England documents a major change in Atomic Rooster's personnel and musical direction following the departure of guitarist John Du Cann and drummer Paul Hammond. Rather than simply repeating the darker progressive hard rock of earlier releases, Crane reshaped the group around Farlowe's powerful vocals and a more pronounced blues, funk and soul influence.

For fans of early-seventies British rock, Hammond-organ-driven music and the meeting point between progressive rock and heavy blues, Made In England is a compelling album from an adventurous period in Atomic Rooster's career. It will appeal to listeners exploring the wider British underground rock scene of the era, as well as collectors interested in the band's changing sound beyond its best-known early recordings.
