Baby Grand – Baby Grand

Released in 1977 on Arista Records, Baby Grand is the self-titled debut album from the American rock band Baby Grand, a Philadelphia-rooted group whose polished, adventurous sound sits at the crossroads of progressive rock, melodic pop and sophisticated late-'70s album rock. Featuring guitarist Eric Bazilian and keyboardist Rob Hyman, both of whom would later become key members of The Hooters, the album captures an earlier chapter in the careers of two accomplished songwriters and musicians.

Baby Grand combine strong vocal melodies, accomplished musicianship and carefully arranged rock songs with a distinctly period-specific blend of keyboard textures, guitar work and polished production. Their sound has drawn comparisons to Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren and Ambrosia, making this an appealing listen for fans of intelligent American pop-rock, melodic progressive rock and the more intricate side of 1970s AOR.

The album opens with “Never Enough”, a concise introduction to the band's melodic approach, followed by “Can't Keep It Inside” and “Bring Me Your Broken Heart”. The latter was released as a single, alongside “Never Enough”, helping establish the album's accessible, song-driven character. “Lady Of My Dreams” rounds out the first side with another showcase for the band's melodic sensibilities.

The second side offers more room to stretch out, particularly on “Down, Down”, an extended track that gives the album a broader progressive-rock dimension. “Alligator Drive” brings further rhythmic energy, while “Shinin' In The Spotlight” reflects the glossy, keyboard-led sophistication of late-'70s American rock. “Boy In The Band” closes the record, completing a varied set that balances tuneful songwriting with accomplished ensemble playing.

The album also features contributions from an experienced circle of musicians, including drummer Rick Marotta, keyboardist Ralph Schuckett and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Producer Rick Chertoff, who would later work closely with Hyman and Bazilian on projects connected with The Hooters, was another important figure in the band's early development.

For collectors exploring the roots of The Hooters, enthusiasts of 1970s American rock, or listeners drawn to the space between progressive pop, melodic rock and sophisticated AOR, Baby Grand offers a fascinating snapshot of a talented group at the beginning of its recorded career. An album worth investigating for its strong songwriting, period production and connections to a later chapter of American rock history.
