A landmark early release from one of the defining bands of the British gothic and post-punk movement, Bauhaus – Dark Entries / Untitled is a classic 1980 7" single and an essential piece of the band's early catalogue.

Released in January 1980, “Dark Entries” was Bauhaus' second single and originally appeared on Axis Records, the label that subsequently became 4AD. It was later reissued through 4AD and Beggars Banquet. The single arrived shortly after the band's groundbreaking debut “Bela Lugosi's Dead”, establishing the darker, more abrasive direction that would become synonymous with Bauhaus.

Driven by Daniel Ash's jagged guitar, Kevin Haskins' frenetic percussion, David J's bass and Peter Murphy's intense, breathless vocals, “Dark Entries” is considerably more punk-influenced and aggressive than the atmospheric reputation sometimes associated with Bauhaus. Its rapid pace, feedback and pounding rhythm capture the raw energy of the band's formative period.

The single's untitled B-side adds an intriguing experimental counterpoint to the ferocity of the A-side. At just 1:24, “Untitled” is a brief but distinctive piece that makes this original two-track release particularly interesting for collectors and fans of Bauhaus' early work. The original 7" release is documented with exactly this A/B pairing and timings.

“Dark Entries” would later appear on Bauhaus' influential debut album In The Flat Field, released by 4AD in November 1980. Its inclusion helped establish the track as one of the essential recordings from the band's early period, alongside songs such as “Double Dare”, “In The Flat Field” and “Stigmata Martyr”.

For collectors of Bauhaus vinyl, gothic rock and classic post-punk 7" singles, Dark Entries is an especially significant release. It belongs to the formative era of the 4AD/Beggars Banquet independent scene and captures Bauhaus before their sound developed into the more expansive and experimental style heard across their later albums.
