Billy Joel – 52nd Street

Originally released on 11 October 1978, 52nd Street is Billy Joel’s sixth studio album and the follow-up to his breakthrough The Stranger. Produced by the celebrated Phil Ramone, the album expanded Joel’s piano-led rock and pop sound with a stronger jazz influence, bringing in musicians including legendary trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, guitarist Eric Gale, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and arranger Dave Grusin.

The album takes its title from New York’s 52nd Street, historically associated with the city’s jazz scene. The connection was particularly appropriate: Joel recorded the album at A&R Recording Studios on 52nd Street during July and August 1978, with the studio’s surroundings also featuring prominently in the album artwork.

Opening with the punchy “Big Shot”, the album quickly moves through some of Joel’s most enduring songs. “Honesty” provides one of his best-known piano ballads, while “My Life” brings a sharper, upbeat pop-rock energy. The jazz influence becomes particularly apparent on “Zanzibar”, which features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Mike Mainieri on vibes, while “Stiletto” incorporates a sophisticated jazz-inflected groove.

The second side is equally varied, from the Latin-tinged “Rosalinda’s Eyes” to the horn-driven “Half A Mile Away” and the expansive, romantic “Until The Night.” The title track closes the album with a brief jazz-inspired tribute to the musical history of Manhattan’s 52nd Street.

52nd Street became Joel’s first Billboard 200 No. 1 album and went on to win the Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. In the UK, the album reached No. 10 on the Official Albums Chart.

A key album from Billy Joel’s late-1970s peak, 52nd Street successfully combines piano-driven rock, sophisticated pop, jazz, soul and New York influences, with “Big Shot,” “Honesty,” “My Life” and “Zanzibar” making it particularly appealing to fans of classic 1970s singer-songwriters and album-oriented rock.
