Black Uhuru – Chill Out

Released in 1982, Chill Out is a landmark roots reggae album by Jamaican vocal group Black Uhuru, capturing the band at the height of its international rise. Following the success of Sinsemilla, the group continued to develop a powerful, modern reggae sound built around deep bass, crisp rhythms, atmospheric production and socially conscious lyrics. The album features the celebrated line-up of Michael Rose, Duckie Simpson and Sandra “Puma” Jones, whose contrasting vocal styles give Black Uhuru its distinctive blend of intensity, harmony and melodic depth.

Black Uhuru emerged from Kingston in the early 1970s and became one of the most influential reggae groups of the roots era. The name, derived from the Swahili word for freedom, reflects the group's connection to themes of liberation, identity and social justice. By the early 1980s, Black Uhuru had developed a sound that combined traditional roots reggae with contemporary studio techniques, helping bring Jamaican music to a wider international audience. Chill Out was released on Island Records and produced by Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, the celebrated rhythm-section duo whose work helped shape the sound of modern reggae.

The title track establishes the album's immersive atmosphere, combining a steady reggae pulse with the band's layered vocal harmonies. “Darkness” and “Eye Market” explore the more serious side of Black Uhuru's writing, while “Right Stuff” brings a tighter, more direct rhythmic feel. Throughout the record, Sly Dunbar's inventive drumming and Robbie Shakespeare's deep, melodic bass provide the foundation for a sound that is both spacious and sharply defined.

The second side continues with “Mondays”, “Fleety Foot” and “Wicked Act”, balancing hypnotic grooves with the group's distinctive vocal interplay. “Moya (Queen Of I Jungle)” stands out for its evocative title and roots-conscious character, while “Emotional Slaughter” closes the album with the intensity and rhythmic drive that define Black Uhuru's finest work. Across the record, the production gives each instrument room to breathe while maintaining the weight and momentum essential to roots reggae.

Chill Out belongs to a particularly important period in reggae history, when Jamaican artists were expanding the musical language of roots reggae through sophisticated arrangements, powerful rhythm sections and international studio collaborations. For listeners drawn to the deep, bass-led sound of early-1980s Jamaican music, it offers an absorbing combination of atmosphere, conscious songwriting and musicianship.

An essential album to explore for fans of Black Uhuru, roots reggae, dub-influenced production and the wider Island Records reggae catalogue, Chill Out captures a group whose distinctive sound helped carry Jamaican reggae into the global mainstream without losing its roots-oriented identity.
