Formed by guitarist Mick Abrahams after his departure from Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig burst onto the British blues scene in 1969 with Ahead Rings Out - a fiery, genre-blurring debut that blends 12-bar blues with prevalent saxophone backgrounds, overdriven guitar, rural country strumming, and funk influences. The record proved an instant success, with sales rivalling those of Jethro Tull's own follow-up album Stand Up, and reaching No. 9 on the UK albums chart.
Abrahams' guitar work sits centre stage throughout, while saxophonist and flautist Jack Lancaster brings a jazzy, improvisational edge that sets the band apart from their blues-rock contemporaries. The result is a stellar mix of gritty, flamboyant blues-rock and open-ended jazz, built around Abrahams' cool-handed playing and Lancaster's fiery horn work. Highlights range from the driving blues-rock energy of It's Only Love and the jazzy interplay of The Modern Alchemist, to the acoustic warmth of Dear Jill.
