Blondie – Autoamerican

Released in 1980, Autoamerican is one of Blondie's most adventurous albums, capturing the New York band at a point when their punk and new wave roots were expanding into disco, reggae, hip-hop, jazz and orchestral pop. Rather than settling into a single sound, Blondie used the album to explore a remarkably broad musical landscape, creating a record that reflects both the eclecticism of the New York scene and the group's willingness to challenge expectations.

Fronted by the distinctive vocals of Debbie Harry and driven by the songwriting partnership of Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, Blondie emerged from the late-1970s New York underground before becoming one of the defining bands of the new wave era. Their music drew on punk's directness, 1960s girl-group pop, vintage rock 'n' roll and contemporary dance music, giving them a versatility that distinguished them from many of their peers.

Produced by Mike Chapman, Autoamerican continues the band's move towards ambitious studio arrangements. The album opens with "Europa", a dramatic instrumental introduction that establishes an expansive, cinematic atmosphere before moving into the playful energy of "Live It Up" and the more understated pop of "Here's Looking At You".

One of the album's defining moments is "The Tide Is High", Blondie's breezy interpretation of the song originally recorded by Jamaican rocksteady group the Paragons. With its relaxed reggae rhythm and Harry's cool, assured vocal delivery, the track became a major international hit and demonstrated the band's ability to bring Jamaican musical influences to a broad pop audience.

The album's other major success, "Rapture", is particularly significant in popular music history. Combining a danceable groove with an extended spoken-rapped passage, it became the first single to top the US Billboard Hot 100 that incorporated rap vocals, helping introduce elements of hip-hop to mainstream pop audiences. Its blend of disco, funk and emerging hip-hop culture remains one of Blondie's most distinctive musical statements.

Elsewhere, "Angels On The Balcony" and "Go Through It" retain the band's sharp-edged new wave character, while "Do The Dark" explores a moodier electronic sound. "Faces" adds another layer to the album's stylistic range, and "T-Birds" brings a more playful rock 'n' roll flavour. The closing tracks, "Walk Like Me" and "Follow Me", underline the contrast between Blondie's punk-informed energy and the more elaborate arrangements heard elsewhere on the record.

What makes Autoamerican so compelling is this willingness to move between musical worlds without losing the band's identity. Its mixture of reggae, disco, new wave, hip-hop, orchestral touches and pop songwriting reflects a period when musical boundaries were becoming increasingly fluid, particularly in New York.

For fans of Blondie, late-1970s and early-1980s new wave, classic alternative pop and genre-crossing records, Autoamerican is a fascinating and rewarding album. It features two of the band's best-known international hits while offering a much wider picture of their creativity and musical ambition.
