Colosseum – Valentyne Suite
Colosseum – Valentyne Suite
A landmark of British progressive rock and jazz-rock, Valentyne Suite is the second studio album by Colosseum, originally released in November 1969 on the legendary Vertigo label. Combining progressive rock, blues, jazz improvisation and ambitious instrumental arrangements, it captures a band pushing beyond conventional rock structures and helping to establish the distinctive sound of the emerging British progressive music scene.
Formed in 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman and saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith, Colosseum brought together musicians with backgrounds in British blues, jazz and contemporary improvisation. Their approach was notably adventurous, combining the energy of a rock group with the instrumental freedom and musical sophistication of a jazz ensemble. The line-up on Valentyne Suite features Hiseman, Heckstall-Smith, guitarist and vocalist James Litherland, bassist Tony Reeves and keyboard player Dave Greenslade.
The album was recorded during the spring and summer of 1969 and produced by Gerry Bron and Tony Reeves. It was particularly significant in the history of Vertigo Records, becoming the label's first album release. Vertigo would go on to become one of Britain's most celebrated homes for adventurous progressive and underground rock, with its distinctive swirling label design becoming an iconic sight among collectors.
The four tracks on the first side demonstrate the band's remarkable stylistic range. 'The Kettle' opens with a driving, hard-edged jazz-rock sound, combining forceful drumming, powerful saxophone and guitar with an infectious rhythmic intensity. 'Elegy' takes a more atmospheric direction, featuring soprano saxophone and a string quartet arrangement by composer Neil Ardley. 'Butty's Blues' returns to the group's blues foundations, while 'The Machine Demands A Sacrifice' explores a heavier, more experimental approach, showcasing the band's ability to move between tightly constructed passages and instrumental improvisation.
The centrepiece is the ambitious three-part 'The Valentyne Suite', which occupies the entire second side. Divided into 'January's Search', 'February's Valentyne' and 'The Grass Is Always Greener...', this extended composition brings together the album's progressive, jazz and classical influences in an expansive musical journey. Its shifting moods, intricate instrumental interplay and carefully developed themes make it one of the defining examples of late-1960s British progressive jazz-rock.
Valentyne Suite remains an important recording from the formative years of progressive rock, demonstrating the possibilities of combining jazz musicianship with the power and adventurous spirit of British rock. Its influence and reputation have endured among enthusiasts of vintage progressive rock, Canterbury-related jazz-rock, blues-rock and experimental British music.
An essential album for fans of Colosseum, early progressive rock, jazz fusion and the classic late-1960s Vertigo catalogue. A compelling example of British musicianship at its most inventive and ambitious.
