Released in 1978, A Single Man marked a significant new chapter for Elton John - his twelfth studio album, and the first to feature lyricist Gary Osborne in place of longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. With John writing melodies at the piano before words came into play, the record has a fresh, unhurried feel that sets it apart from his earlier work.
The album is home to two enduring hits: the disco-tinged Part-Time Love and the hauntingly beautiful instrumental Song For Guy, a tribute to a young Rocket Records messenger who tragically died in a motorcycle accident. Written the very day of his death, the track became a near-global smash and remains one of Elton John's most poignant and beloved compositions. Elsewhere, the sprawling It Ain't Gonna Be Easy and the tender Reverie showcase the album's more reflective, atmospheric side.
Certified gold and platinum in the US, and later becoming Elton John's first album officially released in the Soviet Union, A Single Man is essential listening for collectors charting the singer's evolution through the late 1970s.
