Elvis Presley – My Baby Left Me / I Want You, I Need You, I Love You

"My Baby Left Me" / "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" brings together two classic early recordings from "Elvis Presley", capturing the remarkable transition in his music during 1956 as he moved from the raw rockabilly sound of Sun Records into his hugely successful RCA Victor period. The pairing was originally issued in the US by RCA Victor as 47-6540 on 4 May 1956, with "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" as the A-side and "My Baby Left Me" on the reverse.

"My Baby Left Me" was recorded at RCA's New York studios on 30 January 1956 and is based on the blues song written by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, whose material had already been important to Elvis during his Sun Records years. Its driving rhythm, electric guitar and unmistakable vocal delivery make it one of the standout examples of Elvis's early rock 'n' roll style.

The B-side, "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You", was recorded in Nashville in April 1956 and was written by Maurice Mysels and Ira Kosloff. The song showed a softer, more romantic side of Elvis while retaining the distinctive vocal presence that was rapidly making him one of the biggest stars in popular music. It became a major American success, reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard Top Sellers in Stores chart, while the UK release peaked at No. 14.

For UK collectors, the record was issued by His Master's Voice as POP 235, making this an important early British Elvis single from the height of his breakthrough year. The same recordings also appeared on the 1956 EP The Real Elvis, alongside "Don't Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog".

With its combination of raw rockabilly energy and romantic early rock 'n' roll, this classic Elvis Presley single is an excellent example of the sound that helped define the first great era of rock music. A desirable record for collectors of Elvis Presley, 1950s rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, RCA Victor and His Master's Voice vinyl.
