Genesis – Duke

Released in 1980, Duke represents a pivotal moment in Genesis' career, bridging the gap between the band's progressive-rock roots and the more accessible sound that would bring them widespread commercial success during the 1980s. It was the first Genesis album to reach No. 1 in the UK and helped establish the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford as one of rock's most successful line-ups.

The album combines ambitious, interconnected compositions with concise, radio-friendly songs. Much of the material was originally conceived as a larger suite - often referred to by fans as the "Duke Suite"—with tracks such as “Behind The Lines,” “Guide Vocal,” “Duke's Travels,” and “Duke's End” forming a thematic framework across the album.

At the same time, Duke produced some of Genesis' most enduring songs, including the hit singles “Turn It On Again,” “Duchess,” and “Misunderstanding.” These tracks showcased the band's growing emphasis on melody and accessibility without abandoning the sophistication and musicianship that defined their progressive era.
