Genesis – Selling England By The Pound
Genesis – Selling England By The Pound
Originally released in 1973 on Charisma Records, Selling England By The Pound is widely regarded as one of Genesis's defining progressive rock albums and a landmark of the classic Peter Gabriel-era line-up. Recorded at Island Studios in London during August 1973 and produced by John Burns and Genesis, it was the band's fifth studio album and reached No. 3 in the UK Albums Chart.
The album brings together Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins at a particularly creative point in the band's development. Gabriel's theatrical vocals and storytelling sit alongside Hackett's distinctive guitar work, Banks's elaborate keyboards, Rutherford's bass and 12-string guitars, and Collins's inventive drumming and percussion. The result is richly arranged progressive rock that balances intricate instrumental passages with memorable melodies and distinctly English lyrical imagery.
Opening with the ambitious “Dancing With The Moonlit Knight”, the album immediately establishes its combination of acoustic textures, electric guitar, complex arrangements and dramatic changes of pace. “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)” provides one of the album's most accessible moments and became Genesis's first UK Top 30 single, reaching No. 21 in 1974. Its famous lawnmower imagery also connects directly with the album's distinctive cover painting, The Dream, by British artist Betty Swanwick.
One of the album's major highlights is “Firth Of Fifth”, featuring some of Steve Hackett's most celebrated guitar work alongside Tony Banks's intricate piano and synthesizer passages. “More Fool Me”, sung by Phil Collins, provides a more straightforward contrast before Side B moves into the epic “The Battle Of Epping Forest”, followed by the instrumental “After The Ordeal”.
The closing sequence of “The Cinema Show” and “Aisle Of Plenty” provides one of the album's most expansive passages, with The Cinema Show developing into an extended instrumental section showcasing Banks, Collins and Rutherford. Together with Dancing With The Moonlit Knight and Firth Of Fifth, it demonstrates why Selling England By The Pound remains such an important record in the development of 1970s progressive rock.
For collectors of Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, progressive rock and classic 1970s British rock, Selling England By The Pound is an essential album from Genesis's most celebrated early period. It captures the band before their later transition towards a more accessible sound, when complex compositions, extended instrumental passages and theatrical storytelling were central to their identity.
