Green River – Rehab Doll
Green River – Rehab Doll
Released in 1988, Rehab Doll is the debut and only full-length studio album from Seattle pioneers Green River, a hugely influential band whose heavy, gritty sound helped lay the foundations for the grunge movement that would soon emerge from the Pacific Northwest.
Formed in Seattle in 1984, Green River brought together musicians who would later become central figures in the city's alternative rock scene. The band's line-up included Mark Arm and Steve Turner, who went on to form Mudhoney, alongside Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, who later became founding members of Pearl Jam. Rehab Doll therefore represents an important snapshot of the Seattle underground immediately before grunge broke into the mainstream.
The album opens with "Forever Means," combining distorted guitars and a loose, hard-hitting rhythm with the band's unmistakable punk attitude. The title track, "Rehab Doll," follows with a heavier, more aggressive sound, while "Swallow My Pride" remains one of Green River's best-known songs and a key example of their ability to combine punk energy with thick, sludgy guitar work.
"Together We'll Never" closes the first side before the second half launches into "Smiling And Dyin'" and the ferocious "Porkfist." "Take A Dive" and "One More Stitch" continue the album's raw mixture of punk, garage rock, and heavy guitar riffs, while "Queen Bitch" provides a powerful closing statement.
Rehab Doll occupies an important place in the history of Seattle grunge and alternative rock. Its combination of punk aggression, heavy riffs, garage-rock rawness, and melodic songwriting helped establish a sound that would influence bands across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Essential for fans of Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Melvins, Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam, and early Seattle alternative rock, Rehab Doll is a crucial release for anyone interested in the roots of grunge and the American underground rock scene of the 1980s.
