Jefferson Airplane – Long John Silver
Jefferson Airplane – Long John Silver
Released in 1972, Long John Silver is the seventh and final studio album by the classic line-up of Jefferson Airplane. Arriving at the close of one of the most influential careers in psychedelic rock, the album blends hard-edged rock, folk influences, blues, and the experimental spirit that made the band synonymous with San Francisco's counterculture movement of the late 1960s.
Featuring the distinctive vocals of Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, and Marty Balin, alongside the expressive guitar work of Jorma Kaukonen and the driving bass of Jack Casady, Long John Silver captures Jefferson Airplane during a period of musical transition. While reflecting the changing landscape of early 1970s rock, the album retains the adventurous songwriting and bold arrangements that defined the band's classic sound.
The album opens with the energetic title track Long John Silver, before the soaring Aerie (Gang Of Eagles) showcases Paul Kantner's visionary songwriting. Twilight Double Leader continues with intricate harmonies and dynamic instrumentation, while Milk Train injects a bluesy rock groove. Side A concludes with the reflective and atmospheric The Son Of Jesus, one of the album's most ambitious compositions.
Side B begins with the mysterious Easter?, followed by the powerful Trial By Fire, which features one of Grace Slick's commanding vocal performances. Alexander The Medium explores the band's progressive and psychedelic tendencies with its expansive arrangement, while Eat Starch Mom closes the album on an energetic and memorable note.
Although often overshadowed by earlier classics such as Surrealistic Pillow and Volunteers, Long John Silver has earned a loyal following among fans of Jefferson Airplane and collectors of classic psychedelic rock. As the final studio statement from the band's original era, it remains an important and rewarding chapter in the history of one of America's most influential rock groups.
