Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch – Way Of The Warrior / Last Samurai

Released in 2008 on Defcom Records, Way Of The Warrior / Last Samurai is a heavyweight 12" from the influential drum & bass partnership of Kryptic Minds and Leon Switch. Issued as catalogue DCOM026, the record formed part of the duo's Two Swords project, a concept that drew heavily on Japanese martial arts imagery and the darker, more atmospheric side of underground drum & bass.

The A-side, "Way Of The Warrior", is a brooding neurofunk production built around twisted analogue bass, snarling mid-range textures and rolling drums. Its cinematic atmosphere and martial arts-inspired aesthetic give the track a sense of tension and drama, while the heavy low end and detailed percussion make it particularly effective as a DJ-focused 12". Contemporary Defcom material described it as a haunting, hypnotic take on the samurai theme and a standout example of the duo's production style.

On the AA-side, "Last Samurai" takes an equally dark but slightly more stripped-back approach. The track's combination of heavyweight bass, precise breakbeats and atmospheric production recalls the classic 1990s Metalheadz and Photek sound while updating that aesthetic for the late-2000s drum & bass scene. Contemporary reaction to the release singled it out as an especially powerful track, with one description comparing its sound directly to Photek's Modus Operandi era.

Both tracks were featured on Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch's 2008 Two Swords mix, alongside productions from artists including Sabre, Icicle, Rido and Sunchase. The mix helped place the pair's own productions within a wider strain of sophisticated, futuristic and deeply atmospheric drum & bass that was developing around Defcom and related underground labels at the time.

For collectors of classic 2000s drum & bass vinyl, neurofunk, techstep and the darker side of the genre, Way Of The Warrior / Last Samurai is a particularly strong two-sided release. Its combination of cinematic atmosphere, heavyweight bass and intricate breakbeat production makes DCOM026 an excellent example of Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch's distinctive sound during one of their most respected periods.
