Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin III

Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin III is one of the band's most adventurous and influential albums, showcasing a dramatic expansion of their sound beyond the heavy blues-rock of their first two records. Released in 1970, the album combines hard rock, acoustic folk, blues and progressive influences, revealing a more varied and experimental side of Led Zeppelin.

The album launches with the explosive "Immigrant Song", driven by Jimmy Page's instantly recognisable guitar riff and Robert Plant's powerful vocals. "Friends" immediately changes direction, using acoustic instrumentation and unusual arrangements, while "Celebration Day" brings the electric guitars roaring back.

One of the album's major highlights is "Since I've Been Loving You", a slow-burning blues performance featuring an extraordinary vocal from Plant and some of Page's most expressive guitar playing. "Out On The Tiles" closes the first side with another energetic dose of heavy rock.

Side two demonstrates the band's fascination with traditional folk and acoustic music. "Gallows Pole" gradually builds from a sparse acoustic arrangement into a powerful full-band performance, while "Tangerine" and "That's The Way" reveal a gentler, more melodic side of the group.

"Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is a lively acoustic celebration inspired by the Welsh countryside, while the album concludes with "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper", an experimental blues performance paying tribute to the influential British folk musician.

Recorded partly at Bron-Yr-Aur, a remote cottage in Wales where Page and Plant spent time writing and developing material, Led Zeppelin III reflected the band's growing interest in acoustic and traditional music. The contrast between its thunderous rock songs and intimate folk-influenced performances would become a crucial part of Led Zeppelin's identity.

Although initially surprising to listeners expecting another heavy rock album, Led Zeppelin III has become recognised as one of the band's most important and musically diverse records. It laid much of the groundwork for the expansive approach that would define their subsequent albums.

For collectors of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, classic rock, hard rock, British folk rock and blues rock, Led Zeppelin III is an essential album and a cornerstone of any serious rock vinyl collection.
