Love Battery – Dayglo is a compelling slice of early-1990s Seattle alternative rock, combining grunge's distorted guitar attack with psychedelic textures, melodic songwriting and a distinctly underground edge. Originally released in 1992, the album captures Love Battery at an important point in the development of the Pacific Northwest scene.
The album opens with "Out Of Focus", setting the tone with fuzzed-out guitars, driving rhythms and Ron Nine's distinctive vocals. "Foot", "Damaged" and "See Your Mind" continue the record's blend of heavy riffs and melodic hooks, while "Side (With You)" adds a more atmospheric quality.
Side two begins with "Cool School (Trane Of Thought)", demonstrating the band's more psychedelic tendencies before moving through "Sometimes", "Blonde" and the title track "Dayglo." The closing "23 Modern Stories" provides a fitting finale to an album that constantly balances abrasive guitar rock with more exploratory textures.
Love Battery formed in Seattle in the mid-1980s and became part of the city's influential alternative scene alongside bands such as Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Nirvana. While often grouped under the grunge banner, their music incorporated a wider range of influences, particularly 1960s psychedelia, garage rock and classic guitar-driven alternative music.
Dayglo is particularly notable for its combination of dense guitar sounds and strong melodic sensibility, giving it a character that distinguishes Love Battery from many of their contemporaries. It remains an excellent example of the adventurous side of the early-1990s Seattle underground.
