Mainhorse – Mainhorse

Released in 1971, Mainhorse is the sole studio album by the Swiss-British progressive rock group Mainhorse, a short-lived but musically ambitious band whose sound combined powerful Hammond organ, adventurous electric guitar, jazz-influenced rhythms and extended instrumental passages. The album is particularly notable for featuring keyboard player Patrick Moraz, who would later join Yes in 1974, replacing Rick Wakeman, before going on to work with the Moody Blues.

Formed around Moraz and bassist Jean Ristori, Mainhorse developed a sound that sat firmly within the adventurous end of early-1970s progressive rock. With Peter Lockett on guitar and violin and Bryson Graham on drums, the group brought together muscular hard-rock energy and more exploratory arrangements. Their music draws on the organ-led intensity of contemporary British progressive rock, with elements of psychedelia, blues and jazz woven into its shifting compositions.

The opening “Introduction” makes an immediate impression with forceful Hammond organ, driving percussion and energetic electric guitar. It establishes the band's preference for dynamic interplay rather than straightforward verse-and-chorus songwriting, with Moraz's keyboard work providing a powerful counterpoint to Lockett's guitar. “Passing Years” takes a more reflective direction, easing into a slower, blues-inflected mood and demonstrating the group's ability to balance instrumental power with more restrained songwriting.

“Such A Beautiful Day” returns to a heavier, more animated sound, driven by swirling keyboards and guitar-led passages. The extended “Pale Sky” is one of the album's defining pieces, developing from a bluesy atmosphere into a more expansive instrumental journey. Lockett's violin adds an unusual colour to the arrangement, while Moraz's organ and electric piano help create the shifting textures and rhythmic tension that distinguish the band's approach.

“Basia” brings a brighter, more direct energy to the collection, combining a strong rhythmic foundation with lively keyboard and guitar work. The closing “God” is the album's longest supplied composition, an extended progressive-rock workout that showcases Moraz's technical command of the organ and early synthesizer alongside the band's tight, responsive playing. Its changes of pace and instrumental interplay capture the ambitious spirit of the early progressive scene.

Recorded in London and released in 1971, Mainhorse appeared at a time when progressive rock was expanding beyond conventional rock song structures. Although the group did not achieve widespread commercial success and soon disbanded, the album has since attracted interest from enthusiasts of early European prog, organ-driven hard rock and the lesser-known bands that helped shape the genre.

For fans of Patrick Moraz, early progressive rock, Hammond-heavy arrangements and extended instrumental performances, Mainhorse is a rewarding discovery. Its combination of energetic playing, atmospheric passages and adventurous musicianship makes it an appealing addition to collections focused on the deeper catalogue of early-1970s progressive and psychedelic rock.
