Solid Gold Boogie Boy is a compilation celebrating the classic glam-rock period of Marc Bolan and T. Rex, bringing together 14 tracks from the extraordinary run of singles and album recordings that established Bolan as one of the defining figures of early-1970s British rock. This 1985 Warwick Records LP collects material spanning approximately 1970–1974, taking in the transformation from the emerging electric T. Rex sound through the band's peak glam-rock years.

The collection opens with the records that helped launch T. Rex's breakthrough: "Hot Love", "Ride A White Swan" and "Debora". "Ride A White Swan", recorded in July 1970, marked a crucial move away from Bolan's earlier acoustic Tyrannosaurus Rex sound towards electric rock, while "Hot Love" became T. Rex's first UK No. 1 single in 1971. Bolan's increasingly flamboyant performances around this period, including his famous glittered-eye appearance on Top Of The Pops, became closely associated with the emergence of glam rock.

The second half moves firmly into T. Rex's imperial period, with "Telegram Sam", "Solid Gold, Easy Action", "20th Century Boy", "I Love To Boogie", "Chariot Choogle", "Tenement Lady" and "Casual Agent". "20th Century Boy" dates from 1973, while "I Love To Boogie" comes from 1976, making the compilation's overall recording span broader than the early-1970s focus suggested by much of the tracklist.
