Ministry – Jesus Built My Hotrod
Ministry – Jesus Built My Hotrod
Ministry – Jesus Built My Hotrod is one of the defining singles of early-1990s industrial metal, capturing the Chicago band's transformation from electronic pioneers into one of the heaviest and most influential alternative acts of the era. Released in 1991, the record became a landmark of Ministry's breakthrough period and remains one of their most recognisable tracks.
The extended "Jesus Built My Hotrod (Redline/Whiteline Version)" dominates the A-side, driven by pounding industrial rhythms, distorted guitars, relentless sampling and the unforgettable spoken-word vocals of Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes. Built around a chaotic, engine-revving groove, the track deliberately blurs the boundaries between industrial music, metal, punk and electronic dance music.
The B-side offers the shorter "Short, Pusillanimous So-They-Can-Fit-More-Commercials-On-The-Radio Edit", providing a more compact version of the track while retaining its aggressive energy. "TV Song" completes the release with another dose of Ministry's abrasive electronic-industrial sound.
The single emerged from the same period as Ministry's landmark album Psalm 69: The Way To Succeed And The Way To Suck Eggs? More precisely, Jesus Built My Hotrod was released during the Psalm 69 era and became a major stepping stone towards that album's commercial breakthrough. Its enormous success helped introduce Ministry's extreme industrial sound to a much wider alternative-rock audience.
The track's unusual guest appearance by Gibby Haynes is particularly memorable. His improvised, stream-of-consciousness vocal performance gives the song much of its manic personality, while the production by Al Jourgensen and Ministry turns the performance into a pounding industrial assault.
For collectors of Ministry, industrial metal, industrial rock, Wax Trax!, alternative metal and 1990s electronic music, Jesus Built My Hotrod is an essential piece of industrial-rock history and one of the genre's most instantly recognisable singles.
