Stigmata is one of the defining early releases from Ministry, capturing the Chicago band's transformation from synth-driven electronic music into the abrasive, guitar-heavy industrial sound that would become their trademark. Originally released in 1988, this 12" pairs the Stigmata (Remix) with the intense B-side Tonight We Murder.

The original Stigmata first appeared on Ministry's landmark 1988 album The Land Of Rape And Honey, a record widely regarded as a turning point for both the band and industrial music. Moving away from the synth-pop influences of their earlier work, Ministry introduced distorted guitars, aggressive sampling, pounding electronic rhythms and a far more confrontational sound.

The Stigmata (Remix) presented here takes the track's already abrasive combination of industrial percussion, distorted guitar and manipulated vocals and reshapes it for the club environment. The result is a relentless, mechanical piece of industrial dance music that sits at the crossroads of rock, electronic music and EBM.

On the B-side, Tonight We Murder continues the darker atmosphere with another aggressive blend of pounding rhythms, distorted textures and electronic experimentation. The track demonstrates the increasingly heavy direction Ministry were taking at this point, foreshadowing the industrial metal sound that would become fully established on subsequent albums.
