Mudhoney – Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
Mudhoney – Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
Mudhoney – Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge is a landmark of the early Seattle alternative rock scene, capturing the band's raw, fuzz-heavy sound at a time when grunge was beginning to move from the underground into the mainstream. Released in 1991, the album combines garage rock, punk, psychedelic rock and heavy guitar distortion with Mudhoney's irreverent songwriting and famously abrasive energy.
The album opens with the short, explosive "Generation Genocide", before launching into the driving "Let It Slide" and "Good Enough." "Something So Clear" brings a more melodic dimension, while "Thorn" and "Into The Drink" return to the band's stripped-back garage-punk attack.
One of the album's highlights, "Broken Hands," stretches beyond six minutes, giving Mudhoney space to explore a darker and more psychedelic side of their sound. The second side continues with "Who You Drivin' Now?", "Move Out" and "Shoot The Moon", maintaining the album's combination of catchy riffs and chaotic guitar textures.
"Fuzz Gun '91" is a concise blast of distorted garage rock, while "Pokin' Around" and "Don't Fade IV" showcase the band's ability to combine noise and melody. The album closes with "Check-Out Time," bringing this raw and unpredictable collection to an appropriately ragged conclusion.
Mudhoney were among the most important bands to emerge from Seattle's independent music scene, alongside fellow Sub Pop artists who helped establish the sound and culture that would become known as grunge. Unlike some of the more polished commercial releases that followed, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge retains the rough edges, punk attitude and underground spirit that defined the movement.
For fans of Mudhoney, grunge, Sub Pop, Seattle alternative rock, garage rock, punk and distorted guitar music, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge is an essential early-1990s record and a standout example of the rawer side of the grunge era.
