One of the defining early releases from "Nine Inch Nails", Head Like A Hole showcases three different remixes of the band's breakthrough track from the 1989 album Pretty Hate Machine. Released in the UK in 1990, this three-track 12" strips the release down to the essential Slate, Copper and Opal mixes, offering different interpretations of Trent Reznor's increasingly influential industrial sound.

The “Clay”, “Copper” and “Opal” versions emphasise different aspects of the original recording, from its hard electronic pulse and programmed rhythms through to heavier, more extended industrial textures. The Copper mix runs for over six minutes, while the Opal version provides the longest-form treatment on this particular UK pressing.

“Head Like A Hole” was one of the key tracks from Pretty Hate Machine, Nine Inch Nails' 1989 debut album, and the various remix releases helped establish the band's music within the alternative dance and industrial scenes. The official Nine Inch Nails catalogue lists Head Like A Hole among the band's early singles and EP releases, describing the release as containing numerous mixes produced during the band's formative period.

This UK 12" is particularly appealing to collectors because its compact three-track configuration differs from the considerably longer US Halo 3 12", which included additional remixes and tracks. The UK edition's Opal mix is therefore a distinctive part of the early Nine Inch Nails catalogue.
