Tracks is a superb showcase for Oscar Peterson's extraordinary abilities as a solo pianist, recorded at the Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer studio in Villingen, West Germany, between 10 and 13 November 1970. Originally recorded for the German MPS label, the album places Peterson completely alone at the piano, allowing his dazzling technique, rhythmic invention and harmonic sophistication to take centre stage.

The programme moves effortlessly between jazz standards, popular songs and Peterson's own composition. "Give Me The Simple Life", "Basin Street Blues" and "Honeysuckle Rose" demonstrate his command of swing and stride-influenced playing, while the beautiful "A Child Is Born" provides a more reflective contrast. "Django", John Lewis's tribute to Django Reinhardt, is another highlight, with Peterson using the melody as a starting point for inventive improvisation.

One of the album's most interesting tracks is "A Little Jazz Exercise", the only Peterson original on the record, while the closing "Just A Gigolo" turns the familiar standard into another opportunity for sophisticated solo piano improvisation. The result is an intimate yet technically remarkable late-period recording that demonstrates why Peterson remains one of the most celebrated jazz pianists of the 20th century.
