Hot Rock (VIP) / Brainwave (VIP) is a heavyweight 12-inch from German drum & bass producer Phace, released on Subtitles Music in 2008. The record sits firmly in the darker, more technical end of the drum & bass spectrum, combining complex breakbeats, aggressive bass design and futuristic electronic production. Phace, the alias of Hamburg producer Florian Harres, became one of the key figures in the development of futuristic and technically driven drum & bass during the 2000s. His early work drew heavily on the late-1990s techstep sound while pushing it towards increasingly intricate programming, sound design and neurofunk-influenced production. His breakthrough album Psycho was released through Teebee's Subtitles imprint in 2007 and helped establish his reputation within the international D&B scene.
The A-side features Hot Rock (VIP), a VIP reworking of one of Phace's earlier tracks. The original Hot Rock appeared on Subtitles in 2005, while the VIP version delivers a tougher, refreshed interpretation of the track, with hard-edged percussion, heavy bass movement and the precise sound design associated with Phace's productions.
On the flip, Brainwave (VIP) provides another formidable example of Phace's futuristic production style. Originally associated with his early Psycho era, the VIP version turns the track into a powerful DJ weapon, emphasising intricate drum programming, heavyweight low end and relentless momentum. Both VIPs later appeared as part of the expanded Psycho (Re-Release Deluxe Edition) catalogue.
