Primus – Suck On This
Primus – Suck On This
Originally released in 1989, Suck On This is the explosive live debut from Primus, capturing the California trio's uniquely eccentric fusion of funk, metal, progressive rock, punk, and experimental music. Recorded at the Berkeley Square in Berkeley, California, the album showcases the raw energy and extraordinary musicianship that quickly established Primus as one of the most distinctive bands in the American alternative scene.
At the centre of the band's sound is bassist and vocalist Les Claypool, whose highly technical, slap-heavy bass playing became one of Primus' defining characteristics. Alongside guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander, Claypool creates a powerful and unconventional combination of intricate rhythms, warped guitar textures, complex arrangements, and darkly humorous lyrics. Suck On This captures the trio before their breakthrough on a major label, making it an especially important release for Primus collectors.
The album opens with the instantly recognisable "John The Fisherman," before launching into the off-kilter groove of "Groundhog's Day" and the frenetic "The Heckler." "Pressman" and "Jellikit" showcase the band's remarkable rhythmic interplay, while side two features the legendary "Tommy The Cat," with its rapid-fire vocals and virtuosic bass work. The set continues through "Pudding Time" and the sprawling "Harold Of The Rocks," before closing with the blistering "Frizzle Fry."
For fans of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, and experimental funk rock, Suck On This is an essential Primus release. Raw, unpredictable, technically brilliant, and packed with the energy of a live performance, it remains a landmark recording from one of alternative rock's most unconventional bands.
