Prong – Beg To Differ

Released in 1990, Beg To Differ is a landmark album from New York band Prong, combining the aggression of thrash metal and hardcore punk with the mechanical precision and abrasive textures of industrial music. The album marked a major step forward for the band and helped establish the heavy, groove-driven sound that would influence alternative and industrial metal throughout the 1990s.

Led by guitarist and vocalist Tommy Victor, Prong developed their sound within New York's underground scene, initially drawing on hardcore and noise before incorporating increasingly heavy metal influences. On Beg To Differ, those elements come together with sharp guitar riffs, muscular bass, precise drumming, and Victor's distinctive, controlled vocal delivery.

The album opens with "For Dear Life," immediately establishing its relentless rhythmic attack. "Steady Decline" and the title track "Beg To Differ" follow with tightly constructed riffs and an uncompromising industrial edge, while "Lost And Found" and "Your Fear" demonstrate the band's ability to balance aggression with memorable, groove-heavy songwriting.

Side two continues with "Take It In Hand," "Intermenstrual, D.S.B.," and "Right To Nothing," before "Prime Cut" and "Just The Same" deliver some of the record's most forceful material. The album closes with a live version of "Third From The Sun," showcasing the raw intensity of Prong's performances.

Beg To Differ occupies an important position between hardcore punk, thrash metal, industrial, and alternative metal, making it a hugely influential record for the heavier side of the alternative scene. Its precise rhythms and punishing guitar work would prove particularly influential on the industrial metal and groove metal movements that followed.

Essential listening for fans of Ministry, Helmet, Killing Joke, Voivod, Biohazard, Sepultura, and early industrial metal, Beg To Differ remains one of Prong's defining releases and a must-have for any serious heavy music vinyl collection.
