Released on Decca Records in November 1964, Spotlight On Rick was Rick Nelson's eleventh studio album and his fourth for the label - a polished, radio-ready collection that showcased the teen idol's continued evolution as a mature pop-rock vocalist. Produced by Charles "Bud" Dant, the record captures Nelson bridging the gap between his rock and roll roots and a smoother, more contemporary mid-60s sound.

The album's lead single, A Happy Guy, was released as a 45 two weeks ahead of the LP and found modest chart success, while the record also features an early recording of I'm A Fool, later a hit for Dino, Desi & Billy, and a spirited cover of Chuck Berry's I'm Talking About You.
