Ry Cooder – Paris, Texas (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Ry Cooder’s haunting soundtrack to Wim Wenders’ acclaimed 1984 film Paris, Texas is one of the most distinctive and atmospheric film scores of the 1980s. Originally released in 1985, the album uses Cooder’s expressive slide guitar, sparse instrumentation and minimalist arrangements to create a beautifully desolate sound that perfectly complements the film’s vast Texas landscapes and themes of loneliness, memory and the open road.

The album opens with the evocative title theme Paris, Texas, followed by Brothers, Nothing Out There and Houston In Two Seconds – understated pieces built around Cooder’s distinctive guitar playing. Canción Mixteca provides one of the collection's most memorable moments, featuring vocals in Spanish from actor Harry Dean Stanton, while No Safety Zone and On The Couch further explore the soundtrack’s eerie, spacious and almost ambient qualities.

Side B continues with She's Leaving The Bank, I Knew These People and the deeply atmospheric Dark Was The Night. Cooder’s interpretation of Dark Was The Night draws on the celebrated blues recording by Blind Willie Johnson, providing a powerful connection between traditional American blues and the modern cinematic landscape of Paris, Texas.

For fans of Ry Cooder, slide guitar, roots music, blues, Americana and classic film soundtracks, Paris, Texas is an essential record. Its spare, melancholy sound has become inseparable from Wim Wenders’ cult road movie and stands on its own as one of Ry Cooder’s most atmospheric and enduring recordings.
