Ry Cooder – Show Time

Show Time is the 1977 live album from Ry Cooder, capturing the acclaimed guitarist and roots-music historian at his most relaxed, inventive and entertaining. Recorded live in San Francisco, the album brings together blues, gospel, country, R&B, Tex-Mex and traditional American music in the distinctive style that made Cooder one of the most respected roots musicians of his generation.

Rather than simply presenting a collection of original songs, Show Time reflects Cooder's fascination with the rich musical traditions of the American South and beyond. His extraordinary slide guitar playing sits alongside a tight backing band, creating an intimate live sound that moves effortlessly between blues, country, gospel, soul and Mexican music.

The album opens with the upbeat School Is Out, followed by Alimony, before Cooder delivers a powerful interpretation of the traditional gospel number Jesus On The Mainline. One of the highlights is the slow-burning The Dark End Of The Street, a classic soul ballad originally associated with James Carr, transformed here through Cooder's distinctive guitar work and understated vocal delivery.

Side B begins with the lively Viva Sequin / Do Re Mi, before moving into the Mexican ranchera Volver, Volver, demonstrating Cooder's fascination with the musical traditions of the American Southwest and Mexico. The beautifully arranged How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live follows, bringing the album back towards its blues and gospel roots.

The extended Smack Dab In The Middle provides a suitably energetic finale, giving Cooder and his band plenty of room to stretch out. The track showcases the infectious combination of blues, R&B and roots music that defines the album and makes Show Time feel like a genuine live performance rather than simply a collection of songs recorded in concert.

Ry Cooder had already established himself as an exceptional guitarist and session musician before embarking on his solo career, working with artists including Captain Beefheart, Randy Newman and the Rolling Stones. His solo albums became celebrated for their imaginative reinterpretations of traditional songs and forgotten American musical styles, and Show Time is a particularly enjoyable example of that approach.

The album is also notable for its live ensemble, featuring musicians such as David Lindley, whose multi-instrumental talents add colour to Cooder's eclectic arrangements. Together they create a sound that feels both authentic and playful, moving between musical traditions without ever losing its sense of cohesion.

For collectors of Ry Cooder vinyl, roots rock, blues, Americana, country blues and traditional American music, Show Time is an excellent addition. Fans of Taj Mahal, Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, The Band and John Hiatt should also find plenty to enjoy.

A superb live document from one of American roots music's great interpreters, Show Time combines masterful guitar playing, soulful vocals and an eclectic selection of songs to create an album that remains warm, entertaining and deeply rooted in musical history.
