A fascinating turning point in Santana's career, Santana – Inner Secrets is the group's ninth studio album and a key release from the late 1970s. Originally released in October 1978 on Columbia Records, the album finds Carlos Santana and the band moving towards a more polished and accessible rock sound, while retaining the Latin percussion, rhythmic drive and expressive guitar playing that had defined Santana since their breakthrough.

By 1978, Santana had already established an extraordinary legacy through albums including Santana, Abraxas, Santana III, Caravanserai, Amigos and Moonflower. Inner Secrets arrived at a time when the group was broadening its musical direction, incorporating more contemporary rock, pop and funk influences alongside the Latin rock foundations of their earlier work.

The album opens with “Dealer / Spanish Rose”, a dramatic two-part track written by Jim Capaldi and Carlos Santana. The combination of Santana's fluid guitar lines, driving rhythm section and Latin percussion immediately establishes the record's distinctive blend of rock and international influences. “Move On” follows before the extended “One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)”, bringing a strong funk and soul influence into Santana's sound.

Side A closes with “Stormy,” Santana's atmospheric interpretation of the Classics IV song written by Buddy Buie and James Cobb. Inner Secrets was recorded at Western Recorders in Los Angeles during July and August 1978, with the album subsequently mastered at The Mastering Lab. The sessions featured Carlos Santana alongside musicians including Greg Walker, Chris Solberg, Chris Rhyne, David Margen, Graham Lear, Armando Peraza, Raul Rekow and Pete Escovedo, giving the record a formidable combination of guitar, keyboards, bass, drums and Latin percussion.

Commercially, Inner Secrets was a significant success, reaching No. 27 on the US Billboard 200, while also reaching the Top 20 in several other markets. The album was certified Gold in the United States and United Kingdom, confirming Santana's continued international popularity as the group entered a new phase of their career.
