Released in 1974 on Bronze Records, Living In Fear is the second and final album from Tempest, the muscular power trio built around Colosseum drummer Jon Hiseman and bassist Mark Clarke. With guitar virtuoso Allan Holdsworth having departed for Soft Machine, his place was filled by the phenomenally talented Ollie Halsall, formerly of Patto, who took over guitar, keyboards, and lead vocals for this record.
Halsall's arrival pushed the band in a more streamlined, hard rock direction, stripping back the jazz leanings of the debut in favour of raw energy. Opener Funeral Empire sets the tone with driving intensity, while the sprawling Dance To My Tune stretches out into fusion-tinged territory, showcasing Halsall's dazzling guitar work and keyboard textures. The band even take on a surprising cover of The Beatles' Paperback Writer, reimagined with a heavier edge.
A hidden gem of 1970s British hard rock and prog, Living In Fear stands as a testament to Halsall's extraordinary and often overlooked talent, and remains essential listening for collectors of 70s heavy rock and jazz-fusion crossover.
