The Farm – Groovy Train (Terry Farley Mix)
The Farm – Groovy Train (Terry Farley Mix)
Groovy Train (Terry Farley Mix) is a classic 1990 UK 12" remix from Liverpool's The Farm, capturing the moment when indie rock and club culture began colliding at the height of the Madchester and acid house era. Originally released on Produce Records, this two-track 12" pairs Terry Farley's club-focused remix with the contrasting Rocky & Diesel Mix.
The original Groovy Train was The Farm's breakthrough follow-up to their cover of Stepping Stone, and the song eventually reached No. 6 in the UK Singles Chart. The band's distinctive guitar hook, combined with a dance-oriented rhythm, helped establish the sound that would become closely associated with The Farm's early-1990s crossover between indie rock and club music.
Terry Farley played an important role in that transformation. A key figure in the emerging UK house and club scene, Farley worked with the band and encouraged guitarist Keith Mullin's hypnotic guitar hook to become a much more prominent feature of Groovy Train. The resulting production helped turn the track from a Liverpool indie song into something designed to work on the dancefloor.
The Terry Farley Mix is the main attraction here, with a driving house rhythm underneath The Farm's gritty guitar sound and distinctive vocals. The remix demonstrates the exciting meeting point between indie and dance music that was developing around 1990, when records from artists such as The Farm, Happy Mondays and Primal Scream were increasingly finding their way into clubs as well as alternative venues.
The flip side features The Rocky & Diesel Mix, a notably different interpretation. Rocky & Diesel bring a more spacious, club-oriented feel, with swirling organ, scratching and a different vocal treatment. The duo would later become better known as X-Press 2, making this early remix particularly interesting for collectors of UK house and dance music.
The release is also notable for its place in the wider Boys Own / Madchester crossover, with Groovy Train (Terry Farley Mix) subsequently appearing on the influential Indie Top 20 Vol. 10 compilation.
For collectors of The Farm vinyl, Terry Farley remixes, Madchester, indie dance, acid house and early-1990s UK club music, this is a particularly desirable 12". It captures a pivotal moment when guitars, house beats and rave culture were beginning to share the same dancefloor.
