Recorded live at Claremont College, California in 1958 and originally released by Capitol Records in 1959, Shearing On Stage! captures George Shearing and his celebrated quintet in a more spontaneous concert setting. Rather than the lush orchestral and mood-oriented productions that Shearing was also known for during this period, this album puts the quintet's distinctive interplay firmly at the centre.
Shearing's elegant piano is joined by Emil Richards on vibraphone, Toots Thielemans on guitar and harmonica, Al McKibbon on bass and Percy Brice on drums, with Armando Peraza adding Latin percussion. The combination gives the familiar Shearing sound plenty of rhythmic colour, particularly on numbers such as "Caravan" and the driving finale "Nothing But De Best".
The nine-track programme moves effortlessly between jazz standards and popular songs, including "September In The Rain", "On The Street Where You Live", "Roses Of Picardy", "Little Niles", "I'll Remember April", "Little White Lies" and "East Of The Sun". The recording dates from 8 March 1958, making this a fine example of late-1950s George Shearing Quintet jazz and an appealing listen for fans of cool jazz, sophisticated swing, vibraphone-led jazz and classic Capitol recordings.
