The Mighty Avengers – So Much In Love
Originally released on Decca in August 1964, "So Much In Love" is the best-known single from "The Mighty Avengers", the Rugby-based British beat group who became closely associated with Rolling Stones manager and producer Andrew Loog Oldham. The record is particularly notable for its songwriting connection: the A-side was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, making it an important early example of a Jagger-Richards composition recorded by another artist.
The Mighty Avengers' version reached No. 46 in the UK Singles Chart, spending two weeks in the chart. The song had originally been recorded by The Rolling Stones during their early-1960s sessions but was not released by them at the time; Oldham subsequently arranged for The Mighty Avengers to record it for Decca.
The group came from the Rugby area and featured Tony Campbell on lead guitar and vocals, Dave "Biffo" Beech on drums and vocals, Mike Linnell on bass and lead vocals, and Kevin "Bep" Mahon on guitar and harmonica. Their records sit firmly within the early British beat, R&B and mod landscape, making this an appealing 1960s single for collectors of Decca beat, British Invasion and Rolling Stones-related releases.
The B-side, "Sometime They Say", completes this classic two-track Decca release. Both sides were recorded under the musical direction of John Paul Jones, who would later become the bassist and multi-instrumentalist of Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page has also been associated with the recording sessions, adding another fascinating connection to Britain's emerging 1960s rock scene.
