The Police – Wrapped Around Your Finger

Released in 1983, “Wrapped Around Your Finger” captures The Police at a pivotal point in their evolution, when the British trio were expanding beyond their early punk, reggae and new wave foundations into a more atmospheric, sophisticated sound. Taken from Synchronicity, their fifth and final studio album, the single showcases the band's distinctive ability to combine intricate musicianship with memorable songwriting and an unmistakable sense of mood.

Written by Sting, the song is built around a hypnotic, gradually unfolding arrangement, with delicate keyboard patterns, subtle rhythmic shifts and Andy Summers’ carefully textured guitar work creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Stewart Copeland's precise percussion adds movement without overwhelming the track's measured pace, while Sting's vocal delivery lends the song an enigmatic intensity. Its literary imagery and themes of manipulation, power and shifting control reflect the more introspective direction the band explored on Synchronicity.

Released on A&M Records in 1983, “Wrapped Around Your Finger” became one of the defining singles from the album, which marked the commercial and creative culmination of The Police's career as a recording trio. The expanded 12-inch release is particularly appealing to collectors, bringing together the original single with three additional tracks that extend beyond the standard album programme.

Among the attractions are “Someone To Talk To”, a non-album track written by Andy Summers, and “I Burn For You”, a song that highlights a more atmospheric and emotive side of the band's musical identity. The live version of “Message In A Bottle” adds another dimension, revisiting one of their best-known songs from the earlier Reggatta de Blanc era.

For fans of The Police, classic 1980s new wave, post-punk and British rock, this release offers more than the familiar hit alone. Its combination of a major album-era single, a non-album B-side and additional material makes it an interesting addition to a Police collection, as well as a strong choice for collectors of vintage A&M 12-inch singles.
